Director and Independent Financial Adviser
Tony became an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA) in 1986 and has advised many people in many areas of financial planning. These days he tends to specialize in wealth management for those who want an overall investment and financial planning strategy. Once he knows his client, he then draws on his expertise and experience to design strategies which would typically include investment advice, tax efficient inheritance tax planning, income and capital gains tax planning, to help clients achieve their goals.
Clients report that Tony is very good at helping them think through things and make decisions. He shares valuable ideas and concepts in a way that is easy to understand.
Tony works with individuals, couples and business owners. Often he works with clients' other professional advisers and where appropriate, with their close family (for example when clients are making decisions about inheritance tax planning or how to draw retirement benefits, whether to buy annuities, draw down pension benefits or supplement income from a business or investments).
"To me, good financial planning is all about the people. The clients, their families, other professionals, the fund managers and product providers as well as the team of people I work with. It's getting to know what people want and getting to know who you can trust and work with to deliver the best solutions for our clients. What's most rewarding is developing the long term relationships with clients and their families, being there as they go through changes and seeing them reap the rewards of their financial planning."
Tony's other roles in the business
Tony oversees the fund monitoring and fund selection process for the firm and keeps up to speed with the views of different fund managers and investment groups.
As Director of Baker Davies incorporating Beacon House Tony is responsible for overseeing the advisory process and financial security of the business.
"I have seen a lot of change in financial services since the 1980s and decided when I set up Baker Davies, that building long term security into the business was key. We don't take big risks with our clients' money, or with the business. It seems to be working, we have done virtually no advertising, almost all clients are introduced or recommended to us and we have increased in size and strength despite rocky times for a lot of other IFAs."
Having graduated with an Honours Degree in Business Law, Tony joined the financial planning industry in 1984 on a graduate management training scheme with Target Life. In 1986 he became an IFA and has worked in various practices in Buckinghamshire, Devon and Wimborne before setting up Baker Davies Independent Financial Advisers in Poole in 1999. Tony is committed to maintaining a structured learning approach to his Continuous Professional Development and has qualified for the Diploma in Financial Planning and has obtained his Statement of Professional Standing from the Chartered Insurance Institute.
